Programme Overview

This unique, experiential 5-part modular programme engages ‘teachers as learners.’ Participants will actively interact with primary and secondary sources, art and objects, strengthen historical thinking pedagogies and develop inquiry-based classroom practices.

Learning history is fundamental to understanding our past, present and future. The National Museum of Bermuda is dedicated to empowering educators through professional development workshops rooted in inquiry-based learning while integrating museum education practices.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Target Audience: Local educators of Social Studies, Bermuda Studies, English, Art and the Humanities. Homeschool educators welcome

Credit: 7.5 hours of BEC approved TPD hours (a participation certificate and a complimentary one-year NMB family membership)

Programme Objectives

Educators who commit to this 5-part programme will:

  • Engage in inquiry-based learning to analyse, critically assess and interpret historical events with primary and secondary sources, objects and art
  • Increase confidence in using NMB assets to enrich classroom instruction, design NMB field trips, and create meta-cognition routines for student reflection
  • Gain ‘behind the scenes’ access to Museum collections and staff, exploring objects, art and archival materials
  • Deepen understanding of Bermuda history, including strategies for addressing sensitive historical topics such as enslavement
  • Collaborate with colleagues, co-author tangible teaching resources for pre-Museum visit, on-site-Museum engagement, and post-Museum visit exploration
  • Reflect on the process and its impact through structured evaluation and discussion

Programme Modules will include:

  • Exploring the NMB library and archive: Access to primary and secondary sources, and out of print texts
  • Hall of History Mural & The Family Circle: Use inquiry-based learning and develop cross-curricular connections between literacy, contemporary art, and history
  • Shipwreck Island Exhibit: Deepen understanding of Atlantic World history & the discovery and settlement of Bermuda
  • NMB Teacher’s Resource Guide Freedom Narratives of Mary Prince & Benjamin Benson: Apply historical thinking methods and enhance understanding of Bermuda’s role in the Abolition movement
  • Collaborative Resource Development: Create materials for pre-Museum visit, on-site Museum engagement (Learning Labs/ field trip activities), and post-Museum classroom activities
  • ORID survey technique: Apply structured reflection methods for professional learning and classroom use
