Call for submissions is now open for the Dr. Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition: “Your Eyes on Bermuda”. This exciting competition is a collaborative initiative between the National Museum of Bermuda (NMB) and the late Mrs. Joy Grundy, now in its remarkable fifth year. It warmly welcomes primary, middle, and high school students residing in Bermuda to express their love for the island’s natural and cultural wonders while paying tribute to the memory of Dr. Reg Grundy.

Open to all budding photography enthusiasts aged 7–18 who call Bermuda home, the competition invites participants to capture the essence of one of three captivating themes: “People of Bermuda,” “Bermuda Buildings,” or “Bermuda Wildlife & Nature.” Armed with their smartphones or digital cameras, students are encouraged to tell their unique stories through their lenses.

Entries are categorized into three age groups: 7–10, 11–14, and 15–18. While students can submit photographs for any or all themes, each student may submit only one entry per theme. It’s important to ensure that the submitted photographs meet specific technical requirements, including a minimum file size of 1MB and a maximum of 50MB, with a JPEG format online and a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Staying true to Dr. Grundy’s distinctive style, all images must remain unaltered, free from any image editing software or digital enhancements.

Dr. Reg Grundy, AC, OBE, is celebrated as a monumental figure in the history of international television production and distribution. Yet, beyond the realm of television, he found his passion in wildlife photography. As an Australian-Bermudian, he held a deep affection for Bermuda, particularly its iconic Bermuda Longtail, which he spent 35 years photographing from various vantage points, from the cliffs of Astwood Park to his boat in Castle Harbour and St. David’s Battery. His journey in wildlife photography took him across the globe, always in search of that perfect shot, with his wife, Joy (née Chambers), a renowned author, as his constant companion.

This year’s panel of esteemed judges comprises NMB Curator Dr. Deborah Atwood, Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries Curator Chinni Mahadevan, and Photographer Chris Burville.

Elena Strong, the NMB Executive Director, conveyed her appreciation and enthusiasm for the competition, stating, “Thank you to the late Mrs. Joy Grundy and her team, and our annual, local sponsors: A.F. Smith, Clarien Bank and the Phoenix Stores who make this competition possible. Each year, we are more and more impressed with the number of and calibre of submissions. This competition is an opportunity for students to develop their creativity, patience, visual literacy skills and ability to closely look at the world around them in a unique way. We are so looking forward to seeing this year’s submissions!”

The winning entries will be displayed in Commissioner’s House and featured in MARITimes, NMB’s annual magazine, as well as on the NMB and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites. Prizes abound, including Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank, Phoenix Stores gift certificates, and the coveted ‘Best in Show’ prize: a Canon DSLR camera with lenses, a memory card, filters, and a carrying case. In addition to individual accolades, the school with the highest number of submissions (percentage-wise) will be awarded a generous $1,500 gift certificate to A.F. Smith. In celebration of what would have been Dr. Grundy’s 100th birthday, a special prize will be awarded to every 100th submission.

Mark these important dates on your calendar:

  • November 1 for ages 7–10
  • November 2 for ages 11–14
  • November 3 for ages 15–18

Submissions must be made exclusively online at www.nmb.bm/RG-photo-competition
