On visits to the Island between 1913 and 1918, Canadian artist John Lyman was captivated by Bermuda’s traditional architecture and furniture and embarked on the earliest known deliberate documentation of Bermudian vernacular style. His unpublished photos, sketches and manuscript, re-discovered recently in the Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec, are here accompanied by scholarly analysis and commentary on the houses and furniture he documented from an array of experts in the field.
Notably, the volume includes architectural historian Edward A. Chappell’s significant and extensive research on the evolution of Bermuda’s historic and unique vernacular architecture. Also included are contributions by Duncan McDowall on John Lyman, Edward Harris on Lyman’s manuscript, Keith Adams on the furniture documented by Lyman, Linda Abend on the houses in the photographs, and Jeffrey Klee on Bermuda houses in Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos.
